Electroplankton

Got a Nintendo DS? If not, and you like gaming, you've gotta' get one. I think I like it better than my XBox 360.

Anyway, I just picked up a copy of Electroplankton for the DS. This is one of the coolest things I've seen in years. It's not really a game: there's no goal, no levels, no saving, no win or lose. It's really just a toy - which is what makes it so fascinating.

Basically you use the touch-screen to manipulate dozens of little plankton-like creatures. Each creature makes a different family of noises, and as you manipulate them their noises and their appearance change. That's it. So how come I can spend an hour in front of it and not get bored? I guess if I knew the answer to that I'd have created it and not Tashio Iwai. Somehow this game is more relaxing than exciting, and maybe that's exactly what we all need from time to time.

Either way, you owe it to yourself to at least try it.
